Overcoming Obstacles to Deliver Quality Renovations on Time and Keeping Homeowners Happy

Common obstacles to delivering quality renovations include poor planning, delayed material orders, and more.

At AMC Homes, we strive to make every project run smoothly, ensuring homeowners experience a seamless renovation process. From kitchen and bathroom remodels to home additions and exterior projects, our goal is to deliver quality work on time. But behind the scenes, there are many moving parts—and while we often make it look easy, the reality is that construction is unpredictable.

Today, we’re giving you a behind-the-scenes look at the challenges contractors face daily. We want our homeowners to know that while we do everything in our power to stay on schedule, unexpected obstacles can arise. However, at AMC Homes, we are problem solvers, and no matter what challenges come our way, our focus remains on delivering the best results for our customers.

📅 Managing Project Timelines: Finishing Early vs. Running Late

One of the biggest challenges in contracting is timing. Every project has a target completion date, but in reality, projects can run ahead of schedule or experience delays.

🔹 Finishing Early: Sometimes, everything falls into place—materials arrive on time, the crew works efficiently, and the project wraps up ahead of schedule. But this creates a new challenge: shifting workers to new projects sooner than expected while ensuring customers are ready for us.

🔹 Running Late: On the flip side, delays can happen for reasons out of our control—whether it’s unexpected structural issues, a supply chain delay, or severe weather impacting outdoor work. When this happens, we have to adjust schedules, communicate with customers, and ensure our teams are deployed efficiently.

How We Handle It: Our scheduling team is constantly adjusting timelines, ensuring that when one project finishes early or another runs late, we can quickly pivot and keep things moving forward.

🤒 Sick Team Members & One of the Worst Flu Seasons Yet

This year, we’re experiencing one of the worst flu seasons we can recall. With over 20% of students in local school districts out sick, our team is also feeling the impact. We’ve had multiple crew members out with fevers and illness, which can be a major challenge when trying to keep jobs running on time.

How We Handle It: When team members are out sick, we strategically reassign skilled workers to fill gaps. This can mean moving team members from one job to another, which sometimes leads to temporary communication gaps. We do everything we can to keep homeowners updated and ensure the same level of quality work, even when our team is stretched thin.

🛠️ Filling in Gaps: When Team Members Cover Multiple Jobs

When we have unexpected absences, our experienced team members step up and fill in where needed. While this ensures we continue working on projects, it also means that communication can be a challenge.

🔹 Homeowners may notice a different team on-site than expected.
🔹
We may have to adjust timelines slightly to keep things moving.
🔹
Some days, work may be slower than usual if we’re down a few hands.

How We Handle It: We focus on clear, proactive communication with homeowners. We’ll always update you on scheduling changes, and our project managers are available to answer any concerns along the way.

⛈️ Weather Delays: The Challenge of Outdoor Projects

For exterior projects like roofing, decks, siding, and additions, weather is a major factor. Rain, snow, extreme cold, or high winds can shut down a job site for the day, causing delays in the overall timeline.

How We Handle It: Our crews stay flexible and ready to shift between indoor and outdoor work as needed. If an exterior job is delayed, we adjust scheduling to focus on interior projects so we’re always maximizing productivity.

🚚 Supply Chain Issues & Material Delays

Even though supply chain disruptions aren’t as severe as they were in 2020-2022, we still run into delays on key materials like custom cabinets, specialty tile, and certain appliances.

🔹 Sometimes, materials don’t arrive on time, slowing down a project.
🔹
If a supplier is out of stock, we may have to source materials from another vendor, which takes time.

How We Handle It: Our team orders materials as early as possible to minimize delays. If we know a material will be delayed, we immediately communicate with the homeowner and offer alternative solutions to keep the project moving forward.

🏡 Why We Keep Pushing Forward

At AMC Homes, we never want to let anyone down. Our goal is to deliver top-quality renovations while keeping customers happy and informed. We understand that homeowners count on us to stick to schedules, and even with unexpected challenges, we do everything in our power to keep projects on track.
